Sliktron x Wade Interview

Once again teaming up with Dennis Saint Rose, we've interviewed one of New Orleans' raising stars in the underground circuit. Check out our one on one with Wade after the jump.

So my first time hearing any music from you was, I think around last summer, it was off the UOENO beat and I was like, “Damn Wade, this dude actually sound good!” I wasn’t excepting your flow just from seeing you around campus. I didn’t even know you rapped. So, when did you start rapping?

man I hear that from like 90% of the people I went to UL with lol, but I started actually recording and making my own music in about the 8th or 9th grade out of fun ya know; it wasn't till around the 11th or 12th that I actually really realized I was kinda good at this shit lol

As I said previously, I saw you around school all the time, and out of nowhere, never saw you again, lol. Did you leave college to pursue a more serious career in rap?

I left college for several reasons on top of music man, family matters, financial limitations, a relationship, etc. I just felt like being closer to home would minimize or at least make the problems I was already dealing with personally a lil easier on me.

Who is Hardly Home Productions, how did you and Dj Hennessey meet and start to collaborate?

Who is Hardly Home? lol aww man.. I know the whole "that's family, that's my niggas etc." thing is cliche but that's really what it is, a big family who supports the hell out of each other beyond explanation man it's just something you have to experience.
Me and Hennessy met in High School, I honestly don't remember how the whole music thing came about between us but Lord knows I'm glad it did. That's my brother forever.

I heard that Hardly Home is opening up a studio? Is that true? If so when and where?

Yea man we actually started recording there a couple days ago.
It's located in Plaquemine, La about 10 minutes from Baton Rouge. The studio will be open to the public in June; it was a blessing to be able to purchase our own building and space with no help at all, just to have a safe place to do something we love ya know.

When I listened to Seven for the first time, what I liked a lot was is the 90’s samples, and the real chill vibes. And what’s different about it from most local and even mainstream artist is that, it sounds like a lot of thought was actually put into the project. What was the creative concept and inspiration behind Seven?

Right right, I really appreciate that.
Seven was basically just an audiobook of what was going on in my life that past year before I dropped it. A lot of personal stories and name dropping man I told a LOT!
To me, what made it even better and more personal is that I worked with no one outside of HHP on it as far as production and engineering therefore I had my own input on everything that was going on with it. Everybody just let me do my thing and it turned out to be a Classic.

Do you fear being compared to drake being that you can rap and sing? What sets you apart?

That's a real good question, I mean I don't fear it cause I know eventually it'll start happen, it's BEEN happening. In high school I had people joke around and call me "Swizzy" instead of Drizzy man it's was crazy, and that was wayyyy before Drake was at the point of where he is now.
I don't fear it, I honestly look at it as a compliment. Nowadays who's better than Drake? Who's everybody listening to? Drake. It's not a crime to sing and rap and it's a gift and I'm more than happy I have it. I guess the only thing that separates me from him is that he's Drake and I'm just Wade right now lol.

In the song Vent, towards the end you were having a conversation with God and you said that he said to you “They [other rappers] slandering my name, what’s gotten into them”
And I loved that so much because a lot of rappers these days are on that ‘blasphemous rap’ and being disrespectful and to me it’s corny. In that line was that you basically feeling the same? How do you feel about religion being hyped and mixed in hip hop these days?

Definitely and I'm glad you picked up on it. I feel like that was one of the most slept on lines on the tape actually. I won't sit here and say I haven't used religion as a metaphor of some sort just for lyrical use but as far as taking God's name out of context, never have never will.
I feel like even if you're not a firm believer or follower of God or his works, you should know your limits but it seems as if the artist of our generation don't agree, so yea I definitely agree that it's corny ya know.

What’s your take on the current state of hip-hop in general? Who are you currently listening to and not listening to, new and/or old?

I feel like today's Hip Hop changes too quick, and that's all cause of the simplicity of it. Everything's catchy, but everything's temporary. Everybody has their season and after that the world forgets about you.
I honestly haven't been listening to anything repetitively, I'll listen to something once and that would be it, back to working on my own shit. If it's not HHP or somebody I really fw it, it won't really get a play from me and I don't say that to down anybody's work I just gotta make sure my shit straight first.

Any new projects in the works that everybody needs to look out for? Upcoming shows? I saw that you had hoodies for the winter, got any t-shirts coming out for the summer?

Lol all I can tell you is that Wade puts on for the Summer. I can't give you an exact date but the project will be out before everyone gets back to school. We have a HHP project in the works too with artist like Tarantino, TronGotti, DJ Pooch, DJ Butter etc. a lot of Hardly Home affiliates man, you can hear their music on the official HHP soundcloud as well man.
As far as apparel, we've been plotting on getting some tees done for the summer but the main focus right now is the music, just stay posted on it.
